Usage

As a dietary supplement, take two (2) soft gels daily preferably with a meal. The average adult should aim to consume about 1g of pure EPA/DHA daily or more for best results. The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends 1 gram per day of EPA+DHA for people with heart disease. Higher doses between 2 to 4 grams per day are used to lower unhealthy triglyceride levels in some people. The Food and Drug Administration in the US have indicated that up to 3000 mg of DHA/EPA per day is generally considered safe for most adults. People with specific health problems and medications should consult with their doctor if they require higher doses, however most experts deem that even a very high use of DHA/EPA will most likely be considered non-problematic. If you are pregnant, nursing, taking any medications, or have any medical condition, consult your doctor before use.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids have been highly renowned for their far-reaching health benefits. Omega-3s have been extensively studies and proven to be an effective in reducing inflammation within the body, which is often at the root of most chronic health problems. Anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids help to support a healthy cardiovascular system, digestive system, vision, joint function, skin and hormones.

An Omega-3 Fatty Acid is also known as an Essential Fatty Acid, or EFA, meaning that they cannot be created by the body and must be consumed through a healthy diet. Omega-3s are essential to our health and growth and can be found in healthy whole foods such as vegetables, nuts and most notably, fish. Sadly, most adults in developed nations are deficient in Omega-3s due to a poor diet. The most important and easily digestible Omega-3 Fatty Acids are contained within fish and are known as EPA and DHA. It is these two types of Omega-3 fatty acids that have the most scientific backing, particularly for their health benefits for joints, the central nervous system, skin care and hormonal balance.

Omega-3 to Omega-6-9 Ratio

The diet of most people living in the western, developed world contains high levels of other types of fatty acids, known as Omega-6s and Omega-9s. Omega-6s are found in nearly all packaged, processed foods due to being the main source of fat in refined oils like corn oil, soybean oil, safflower oil and more. Omega-9s are commonly consumed through olive oil.

The modern diet on the other hand contains quite low amounts of essential Omega 3s, resulting in an imbalance between the types of fatty acids which can be dangerous and lead to disease. While Omega-6s and Omega-9s are not inherently unhealthy or harmful, it’s the ratio between the different kinds of acids that either produces health benefits or can be destructive. Traditionally, our ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 fatty acids was about 3:1, which was the perfect balance for our bodies. Now the ratio lies closer to 20:1, with much more omega-6s being consumed. At this high a ratio, the omega 6 ends up becoming rather pro-inflammatory, with not enough omega 3 to counter the inflammation. The rates of chronic degenerative conditions with inflammation being the underlying cause are skyrocketing, and this is one of the major reasons why.

In order to counteract this upset balance of good fats in our bodies, it is a good idea to supplement with extra Omega 3 as well as reduce the amount of Omega 6 consumed in the diet. Adding an Omega 3 Fish Oil into your day-to-day routine will not only be convenient and cost-effective, but will also is a necessary step in your step towards a healthier fat ratio.

    Yep, they're "burp-free"!

Posted by Susan (Amazon Reviewer on 6th May 2015

I just finished testing another Omega 3 Fish Oil that for me was not burp-free and now I've been taking this Omega-3 Supreme for a couple weeks now and from the very first day I did not burp them up, yay! I don't like fish, so burping up fish oil is not my favorite taste; lol. In 2 softgels this has 1400mg of fish oil concentrate. I started taking fish oil years back after having my hands cramp up on me (tingling) and waking me up during the night due to knitting and crocheting for many years. I would have to shake my hands to get them to wake up and sometimes it took half an hour or so. I researched and found that fish oil might help and it does. My hands aren't "cramp free", but they're sure better than they use to be and it's been quite a while since they woke me up. This last couple weeks has been a really good test, because I've had a cold and about all I've been doing is sitting knitting and my hands haven't been hurting. I plan to keep taking fish oil since I don't plan on giving up knitting and crocheting. :-) These come in a dark bottle so they are not exposed to the heat and light (to prevent oxidation) and we keep them in the refrigerator after opening. I would definitely recommend taking this fish oil, since they're burp-free (plus there's a 15% off coupon in the box on your next purchase at Amazon).

A good product for my joints and overall health

Posted by Tamara (Amazon Reviewer) on 4th May 2015

I am not an expert on Fish Oil supplements, but have tried several brands on and off throughout my life. This product claims to have higher levels of Omega-3’s over other brands. Well, I guess I will have to take their word for it as I have no way to test this fact. What I can tell you is this: This product does not have a bad smell and there are none of the “fishy” burps that are sometimes associated with taking a fish oil supplement. I have experienced no bad side effects while on this product. Let’s talk about the size shall we? These are not huge when compared to other Omega-3 supplements, but they are difficult to swallow because they are somewhat hard. I expect softgels to be soft, not hard and this is the only reason I am giving this product 4 stars instead of 5. As far as health benefits, only time will tell (and a yearly physical), so I will continue taking this product for my joints and to support my overall health. You can’t beat the cost of this product, so I would not hesitate to purchase again.

High quality, large serving fish oil softgels. Good deal

Posted by Oleg Medvedkov (Amazon Reviewer) on 1st May 2015

First, I'd like to mention that I received a bottle of this product from the company that makes it for evaluation and testing. Secondly, I want to make it clear that I take my fish oil very seriously-it's a part of my daily dietary supplement that I've been following for many years for migraine prevention. That said, I've tested this particular fish oil for two whole weeks before writing this review. Two weeks is usually a sufficient time for me to observe my reaction to a new supplement. Before this, I was taking Nordic Naturals (1000mg) and Nature Made (1200mg). Note: The last one is not usually my first choice, but my local supermarket did have a very good sale recently, so I stocked up :P Lets compare them: Nordic Naturals (1000mg serving, you need to take 2 softgels, each one is only 500mg): EPA--330mg DHA--220mg Nature Made (1200mg serving, single softgel): EPA--360mg DHA--300mg Life & Food (1400mg serving, single softgel): EPA--647mg DHA--253mg The ratio of EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) to DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) is often overlooked. While both are vitally important, it seems that if the amount of EPA exceeds the amount of DHA in fish oil supplements, it is more beneficial in the prevention of some neurological disorders. There was a metastudy done in 2009 that found that patients taking omega-3 supplements with a higher EPA:DHA ratio experienced fewer depressive symptoms. I usually go for higher EPA:DHA ratio fish oil-it seems to work better for my migraines. Now, allow me to describe what you are getting here. The pills are pretty big, as you could probably imagine pills containing a full 1400mg serving would be. It's a consideration for some but it's really not that big of a deal-the softgels are softer than most other brands, almost like gummy bears-thus they go down pretty easy. There is a slight "fishy" smell to the softgels. I am actually glad that it is the case. Apart from some high-end brands that add flavoring to mask the smell, the regular trick in the industry is to coat either pills or the inside of the bottle with some chemicals that neutralize the odor. Tip: If you ever open the bottle of fish oil pills and all you can smell is a strange "chemical odor," you might want to consider trying out another brand instead. I don't know about you, but I am not very keen on ingesting some unidentifiable chemicals. A slight "fishy" smell is good, that means there are no artificial additives. I'll have to take the company's word for the fish oil being "Molecularly distilled, mercury free, and triple contaminant tested." There's no way I can test for that myself. However, most commercial fish oil is put through pretty rigorous testing, both internal and independent; at this day and age, I am not really worried about contamination that much as long as I buy my product from a respectable company. The enteric coating works very well here. In case you are wondering what it is, it's a coating on a pill that is designed to dissolve not in your stomach but in the small intestine. Simply put, there are no "fishy burps" when taking these pills. I hope you found some of the information in this review useful. For me, high EPA:DHA ratio, no "fishy burps," comparatively low price, and the fact that it's on Prime, makes it "a buy". I will buy another bottle when this one runs out to continue testing. If there are any updates to the above, I'll post it here.

GOED standard above 1000 mg is what you need

Posted by DD on 27th Mar 2015

High quality fish oils with no taste or smell. If you look carefully at all the literature you will see that the minimum requirement is 1000 mg of Omega-3, NOT just fish oil. This product contains the required amount and high quality too. Most other fish oil products are filled with NON-OMEGA3 fish oil, therefore making it seem like they have lot's of content. But read carefully. These are one of the best I've seen.
